Full Waveform Lidar Remote Sensing for Forest Inventory in New South Wales, Australia

چکیده
Australia has the sixth largest forest area in the world, consisting of 164 million hectares covering 21% of the continent. The Australian government has invested in research for management of forests by construction of forest database and detection of forest change. The full waveform lidar study for the extraction of plot statistics such as percentile tree counts, stem measurement, and canopy cover, will contribute to forest resource management and analysis. Such study will be of benefit to the Forests New South Wales and other industries that require reliable forest resource data, such as land care, national defence, emergency services, and fire fighting authorities. This study aims to deliver increased sampling accuracy and objectivity at lower costs, to forest inventory using full waveform lidar. This involves a paradigm shift from 100% field survey dependent forest sampling to a mix of lidar plot interpretation with significantly fewer field plot samples. The process will enable the efficient measurement of thousands of forest resource field plots instead of the current few hundred. The outcome of the study is a pioneering processing platform that fully utilizes the potential of full waveform lidar data and that meets the current and future forest resource assessment and inventory requirements of the Forests New South Wales.

Integration of Lidar, Landsat Etm+ and Forest Inventory Data for Regional Forest Mapping
Recent work has established the utility of waveform sampling lidar for predicting forest structural attributes. Nevertheless, serious obstacles to its wide-spread use still exist. They include the lack of waveform sampling lidar sensors capable of measuring forest canopy structure over large extents, and the practical difficulty of developing widely applicable relationships to predict forest st...
متن کاملTree Species Detection Accuracies Using Discrete Point Lidar and Airborne Waveform Lidar
Species information is a key component of any forest inventory. However, when performing forest inventory from aerial scanning Lidar data, species classification can be very difficult. We investigated changes in classification accuracy while identifying five individual tree species (Douglas-fir, western redcedar, bigleaf maple, red alder, and black cottonwood) in the Pacific Northwest United St...
متن کاملForest Canopy LAI and Vertical FAVD Profile Inversion from Airborne Full-Waveform LiDAR Data Based on a Radiative Transfer Model
Forest canopy leaf area index (LAI) is a critical variable for the modeling of climates and ecosystems over both regional and global scales. This paper proposes a physically based method to retrieve LAI and foliage area volume density (FAVD) profile directly from full-waveform Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data using a radiative transfer (RT) model. First, a physical interaction model bet...
متن کاملCharacterization of Canopy Layering in Forested Ecosystems Using Full Waveform Lidar
Canopy structure, the vertical distribution of canopy material, is an important element of forest ecosystem dynamics and habitat preference. Although vertical stratification, or “canopy layering,” is a basic characterization of canopy structure for research and forest management, it is difficult to quantify at landscape scales. In this paper we describe canopy structure and develop methodologie...
متن کامل3D Modelling of Individual Trees Using Full-waveform Lidar
For the last few decades, analysis of forest area has been conducted using remote sensing techniques such as aerial photogrammetry, satellite imagery, synthetic aperture radar and lidar. Airborne laser scanning in particular offers a cost-effective, versatile, operationally flexible and robust sampling tool for forest management. There is a growing industry trend towards techniques of ‘precisio...
